About Pretty In Paint Parties

Amelia Courtney and Erica Bridges never planned to go into business together. They originally met and became friends because their children were in preschool together. But after Courtney took a trip down South and attended a paint party at an art studio, the pair realized they had stumbled across something special.

When Courtney returned to their home in New Jersey and showed off her painting, Bridges decided she wanted something similar to hang in her home. But because the idea of a paint party was still relatively new at the time, there wasn’t a studio offering that type of event in their area. So they decided to throw their own party. They reached out to another one of their friends who happened to be an artist, and she agreed to guide Courtney and Bridges—along with some of their other friends and neighbors—through the painting process over apps and cocktails. By the end of the night, it was clear that there was potential for this fun and simple concept to become a successful business. With that, Pretty in Paint Parties was born.

Pretty in Paint Parties was founded in 2012 on the idea that the same studio paint and sip concept could and would be mobile. Why be in the same location when you can paint in your own private setting with YOUR friends, YOUR family, YOUR co-workers, and not a group of strangers?

By 2015, Erica and Amelia knew that there was a bigger picture and wanted to expand Pretty in Paint even more. However, they knew that the two of them being working moms would fill up their schedules, they thought it was time to share the love of Pretty in Paint and offer others the same opportunity to run their own business. Since then, Pretty in Paint Parties' franchise system has been rapidly evolving.

What is the Investment?

Startup costs to open a Pretty in Paint Parties franchise varies depending on the number of territories you are looking to acquire.  For a single territory, the overall investment ranges from $14,775 to $37,400.  This includes a one-time franchise fee of $15,000, with development territories available for an additional fee.  As with most franchises, the brand does collect a royalty on gross sales to cover its ongoing training and support, and for continuing use of the franchise license, marks, etc.  More information can be found in Item 7 of Pretty in Paint Parties' Franchise Disclosure Document.

Why I Bought

As an artist and graphic designer, Michelle Nicosia Coyle has always been interested in the paint party industry. She even kept track of the industry’s trends from the sidelines while paint and sip concepts took off across the country. But it wasn’t until she came across Pretty in Paint Parties that Coyle realized she could use her skills to launch her own business.

She first learned about the brand on accident—while entering email addresses for another company’s local marketing campaign, she came across one with the Pretty in Paint Parties name. Coyle’s curiosity was spiked, so she decided to do some research. The more she learned about the brand, the more she knew that she wanted to be a part of it. So she reached out to its co-founders, Amelia Courtney and Erica Baatz Bridgers, to see if there were any jobs available.

Since then, Coyle has worn a lot of hats under the Pretty in Paint Parties brand. From designing business cards and logos as a graphic designer and serving as its marketing director to working as an artist hosting individual parties, she has played an active role in helping the business expand. That’s why she decided to become one of its first franchisees when Pretty in Paint Parties officially launched its business ownership opportunity.

“When I first started thinking about making the switch to become a Pretty in Paint Parties franchisee, I looked at other brands in my area to see what the market was like. I found that even though I was able to find a class that might work for my schedule, I wasn’t excited about the artwork that was set for that day. That’s when I knew that the Pretty in Paint Parties concept would work here—our ability to tailor each party to a clients’ preferences is completely unique,” said Coyle. “I couldn’t be happier with my decision to franchise with the brand. Even though I’ve only officially been up and running for a few months, business is booming.”  

Right now, Coyle owns two territories in New Jersey’s Burlington and Monmouth Counties. And while she’s still in the process of rolling out marketing campaigns to spread the word about the Pretty in Paint Parties brand, she’s still booking events on a consistent basis. She even hired two new artists to help meet the rising demand for the brand’s services in the area.

“The biggest benefit that comes with growing alongside Pretty in Paint Parties is the fact that I truly love my job and have the chance to work with a team of passionate and supportive people. It’s rare to find a career that allows you to make money doing what you enjoy, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this system,” Coyle said. “Our network is growing at an incredibly rapid rate, and there’s a real sense of community that’s felt across our entire system on a daily basis. What about Pretty in Paint Parties makes it unique within its industry?

Pretty in Paint is an on-site painting party company, which means that it does not have a studio location. We provide an intimate setting in your very own home, office or individual choice of location. You, the hostess, are able to make all of the decisions. You choose the painting from our exquisite gallery and then invite your friends & family. You will not be painting amongst strangers in a loud bar or studio. You again, choose your setting! 

Our services are better than other paint party companies because we host parties in intimate settings, we only use quality materials and all of our artists are qualified to instruct in each scenario. Each artist is trained to leave each party with all of the mess, meaning that all that’s left behind for the hostess are the gorgeous 16x20 masterpieces that were painted by each guest. The location is left in the same condition as it was before PIP arrived! Our personal administration service is just another added touch. The most important part of our company & the foundation of Pretty in Paint is our "Just BeCAUSE" program, which serves as our fundraising initiative. Each year we have tripled the amount of donations that we have given back to hundreds of deserving organizations and foundations. 

What have been some of the brand's most important milestones over the past five years?

Pretty in Paint has branched out to over 20 states and has given over 50 independent artists the opportunity to earn money doing what that love while they LOVE what they are doing! Giving women and men alike the chance to work either part time or full time while maintaining a steady home life has been a mission of ours from the beginning. Growth is also very important to Pretty in Paint.  While keeping a strong base on the East Coast, we look forward to growth throughout the country in the years to come.  

Our growing art gallery is a something we pride ourselves on as well.  Each piece is well thought out and belongs to Pretty in Paint. 

Another instrumental part of the Pretty in Paint brand is giving back to the community. In the last five years, we have donated over $75,000.  And this year we plan to announce our co-branding fundraising efforts with Stand Up To Cancer. 

Our goal has always been to bring our business to other men and woman that wanted the same opportunity.  Franchising was the biggest milestone we have reached to date. Five years of preparing, planning and understanding the importance of making this right for all of our franchisees is a process that we are very proud of. 

What plans does the brand have in the coming years?

Pretty in Paint is looking forward to watching each franchisee grow with an extensive support system, including in depth web design and SEO services. We’ve established a great digital presence through social media and are eager to continuing to spread the word about our franchising opportunity through 1851 Magazine. Paint parties are here to stay, and we plan on making the most of the opportunity to grow.
